Sunday Night Family Update

It's about 8:30 Sunday evening. I am done reading my Book of Mormon for awhile and thought I would update the weekend activities. (It seems like everyone is really taking President Hinckley seriously on this reading thing... I can't remember having more Book of Mormon conversations with friends.)

Friday night was an awesome high school football game. Hart v. Valencia. The big rivalry. Nine out of the ten sportspage pundits in the two big papers picked Valencia to win by a touchdown. But Tyler (#48) and his buddies played their hearts out and came away with a hard-earned victory (17-14). They were more than happy, although the team is pretty much walking wounded today. Ty looks pretty happy though...

Saturday was a long one. I took the Priests Quorum shooting (clay pidgeons) at the local shooting range. It was pretty fun even though I was horrible (7 out of 25 hits). At least I didn't come in last! One kid hit 22 out of 25! Yikes. I was surprised that I could hit anything. Natural athletic ability is my assumption... Then we hit In-N-Out as a group to reward ourselves for a job well done.

While Carol amd Ty worked on the Stake Dance prep, I watched a little of the BYU game on Saturday afternoon - enought to see nephew/cousin KC get in there and hit an Air Force receiver.

Then we had a Stake Halloween Dance outside at a member's home. About a half hour outside of town. Carol and the Stake Young Women and Young Men leaders put together an awesome Spook alley and worked in it for the first half of the dance. Tyler looked great after he and Carol worked on his costume (little kid cowboy guns and hat and chaps!). See photo with hot Mom!

Young Women President and I taught a combined 5th Sunday lesson to the Young Men and Young Women today. We had about 40 kids and it was fun. I would much rather be in there with the youth than with the boring old adults.

Hope everybody's well. I'm beat. 'night.

October 27, 2005

It's Thursday evening and a lot is going on in the world and in our house. Carol got outta work as quickly as she could today. City Council Secretary is a nuts job! Jeff got home from work and is trying to plan out a trip to Utah to start school up there in January. Planning is fun, but stressful, plus we hate him leaving... Tyler and Dane went to the girls' volleyball game (hmm... I wonder why) and then they are going out to dinner with the mens' volleyball coach to talk about the upcoming season.
I'm going to go get some saurkraut for my brats & tots (that's bratwurst & tater tots for the uninformed). Mmmmmmmm (I'm Homer.)
I love all the political intrigue of the past few weeks. Harriet Miers bailing out of the Supreme Court nomination was too bad. I would have liked to listen to the hearings. I wouldn't have picked her, but I would have given her a chance to make her case. Heck, I think I could write decisions for the High Court. You don't have to be an Appellate Court Judge, just brilliant, like me!
I also find the Rove/Libby/Wilson/Plame mess a mess. From what I can see, Rove and Libby didn't break any laws talking about Plame. However, if they lied to the Grand Jury or obstructed the investigation, they should be indicted. That stinks. But the law is the law is the law.
Couldn't care less about the White Sox and the world series. I saw a little. Seemed like great games. Just not my teams. I am deep into high school (Hart), college (BYU), and pro (Chargers/Ravens) football. and College (BYU) and pro (Lakers) basketball. and even a little hockey (Kings). That's fun... and violent!
Going home.

Update Moment

Midnight in late October and I am thinking too much...

We had a great Stake Conference this past weekend. The theme came from 2 Nephi 5:27: "And it came to pass that we lived after the manner of happiness."

Our Stake President told us how to do that. He said 1) personal religious observance, 2) strengthen our families, 3) worship at the temple, and 4) provide more service to others. He said that we are going to keep this theme for a while (it was also our theme in 1999!) and he focused on the first idea: improving our personal religious observance. Prayers, family nights, scripture study. It sounds so easy. [President Garns told the HC that this Book of Mormon reading challenge by President Hinckley will be a weeding of our stake... yikes.)

I will add some thoughts about this later, but I wanted to put it down on paper to get me started. I have no doubt that he was inspired to select this theme for my benefit. Sorry everyone else who didn't need it...

I am pretty sure that Heavenly Father wants to bless us. In fact, I think we will someday find out that he blessed us so often in our sin and weakness that we will feel total humiliation if we don't at least TRY to approach him sincerely with our repentence efforts.

I love the gospel and how I fee when I am pondering and discussing it. Why don't I do it better and more?

PeaceOut.
