Tyler's Out

Tyler's out but not down after seeing the doctor for his dislocated shoulder. Dr. Karzel is a sports medicine orthopedist who was the doctor on the Hart sideline on Friday night. He is the one who "popped" Ty's arm back into the socket. He confirmed that there is no fracture. But he said that Ty has 4-6 weeks of recovery time ahead of him.
The ligaments are attached to the should via a ring of tissue called the labrum. Dr. K. thinks Ty completely tore the labrum off the shoulder. He said most people treat this surgically, but he doesn't want to do it on this first dislocation. So he gave him some exercises and told him to rest it. He also said that Ty was one of the toughest kids he has ever seen since he has been doing this. He was impressed that Ty handled the pain amazingly.
So Ty will be on the sideline this week when his team plays a very tough game. But he has to get ready for school volleyball and church basketball!! Those are critical things!

Friday Night Football

Tyler started at wide receiver for the Hart Indians tonight. He was pretty excited. Mom was pretty nervous as his name was announced over the loudspeakers. It was fun to see him out on the field. Hart played a shaky first half, so getting to half time with a lead was great. With about two minutes to go in the half, Ty dislocated his shoulder on a blocking assignment. He stayed in for another play and then came out. They laid him down on the sideline and popped his shoulder back into the socket. The trainer said he was one of the toughest kids he'd seen. He was in quite a bit of pain and the trainer said there was no way he was going back in. He will go for an x-ray on Monday morning. Anyway, Hart had a better second half and won the game against the Los Osos Grizzlies 21-18. So next week, it's on to Mission Viejo, the #2 ranked team in the US, #1 in California. It would be a great win.
Happy Holidays to all!!!!

Thanksgiving Day

It was a very nice day. I got up and went to the ward turkey bowl. We had about 20-25 guys out, about half young men and half oldsters. I didn't get injured, so it was a successful morning. We played for about 2 hours and I am a little stiff. Some of those muscles have not been used for quite awhile.

Tyler had to go to school football practice. It is a Hart High School tradition that they hold a practice on Thanksgiving Day. Alumni players home for the holidays come to the field and hang out and generally tell the team how much better they were in their day! Ty said he had a good practice. #48 is pretty tough.

We had the missionaries at the house today. Elders Shane and Thompson, the APs, came over for dinner. What great young men. I love to have the boys around them. It's very fun when we have four missionaries or returned missionaries (including Jeff and me). We all have stories to tell. The food was amazing. Carol went nuts. BBQ turkey, roast beef roasted to perfection, yams (with the brown sugar and pecan coating), a ton of mashed potatoes, gravy, ten pounds of stuffing, green Mormon jello salad, waldorf salad, 3 pies, all kinds of hors deuvres, cheesy potatoes... And more. Everything was great!! Mom, you missed a big dinner!

And it looks like the Lakers are going to get a nice win for me too. Good day!

Thanksgiving

Apparently Ben Franklin first suggested that the Thanksgiving celebration should be a FAST to help us appreciate our blessings. (The Compleated Autobiography by Benjamin Franklin.) Glad he lost that battle... Carol is going to work for tomorrow. This is the BEST holiday!!!!

Hart Football

Yikes. It has been a crazy week for Tyler and the football team. Following a "hazing" incident 3 boys were kicked off the team. All 3 were varsity starters. So it made Friday night's play-off game against Glendora all the scarier. Still they found a way to win. They won by a touchdown scored in the last seconds of the game. It was a fun night all things considered. Ty had fun with his friends and Jeff played photographer and musical consultant down on the field. Carol and I sat in the stands and watched people go crazy (particularly the parents of a couple of players. They were sitting near us and were a little out of control.
Saturday was films for Ty. Jeff playing with Flick and buddies. Me at work for a while. Jeff and Flick and I watched the BYU loss to Utah in OT in the big rivalry game. Why do I pay $20 for a game that can be a loser!?!?!?! Carol went to a work wedding and reception with work pals.

Veterans Day

Not a lot to post here, but I wanted to make a note that we remember the Veterans. Both Grandpa Chuck and Grandpa Bob were US Air Force. Carol and I both grew up as military brats. I travelled a lot as a kid to many USAF bases and Carol and the Haackes were also familiar with long distance (TDY) Dad assignments. There are sacrifices in military families, but lots of benefits too.
Thanks to those who serve.

Canyon 16 - Hart 14

Whew! This was a tough loss. Hart had the ball on the 6 yard line and was ready to punch it in for the go-ahead touchdown, when one of the boys lined up a little too close to the quarterback and between them they managed to fumble it away. There was terrible refereeing and our qb didn't throw the ball very well and one of our receivers dropped about 4 passes, but it was still a great game to watch. We are proud of the boys and the way they handled it. Hart comes in second in the Foothill League and starts the play-offs next week. I know Ty will work hard over the next few days!

Hot Carol at the game! What are those people looking at???

Election Day

Jeff and Carol and I voted for Arnold's propositions today. I noted that Matt was listed as voter eligible even though he has been gone for years. I wonder how much of that there is on the books.
Carol and I are a little under the weather, but the boys are doing great. Ty is gearing up for the big football game on Thursday evening (Hart vs. Canyon - both undefeated for the championship of the Foothill League). Jeff has finished his job at St. Jude and is preparing to move up to Utah to go to school and get away from Mom & Dad. It's about time!! He's gonna have a blast.
Going to go watch the election results come in. These are the times that my political science degree raises its ugly head and drags me into some otherworld that I enjoy too much.
Go Arnold!

Friday & Saturday

Whew! Busy days.
On Friday Becky & family came for a quick visit to get Zach to the temple to take out his endowments pre-mission. It was a fun few hours.
Saturday morning thetemple trip was wonderful. See Mom & Zach in photo. Also Zach and escort Chris (and me) after our long session on the last day the temple is open for a while.

While we were there, Carol & Ash had pedicures and went to the mall (nice morning for Aunt Carol). Carol took Maxwell to plant an oak tree at the city tree planting event. Jeff took his "19 year old" cousin Harrison to play in the Singles Ward basketball game (they won the play-off game by 3 points!).
